It was 2 am and she was not able to sleep, trying to figure out what piercing she would get.
At 4:45 she finally came up with an idea of getting her lower lip pierced.Though she knew her parents would not allow her to do so she was still determined to have it.Next day, she told about this to her parents at the dining table while having semolina and juice. As expected, they were completely against the idea and tried to convince her not to do it.She didn't say anything that time. The next day was Sunday and the college was off. Since morning she was roaming in pajamas and Tee. As the clock struck 12,she ran away from the house picking up her wallet, without even changing the pjs, this much excited she was.In the midway to a jewellery shop, she was accompanied by a friend. At the jewellery shop, she got her lip pierced by the gunshot which got stuck half way and she was in excruciating pain. The jeweller took out the stud and asked her if she would like to do it. She said "yes",the excitement and determination was still there. In the next 20 minutes her lip got pierced and she was on cloud nine!
While returning home, her friend asked her if she got the permission from home,to which she replied "Nah".
Before her friend could ask any other question, she signalled her to be quiet.
They reached home, opened the door and saw that the grandparents were sitting on the sofa with the parents who were fuming in anger. The girl went up to her maternal grandmother and hugged her.The grandmother who wears saree and is in contrast with the lower lip piercing.
But she was the only one who had said Yes to the idea when she was being called the night before!
The lady in her late 60's was very supportive of the girl being pierced and told her that she was very proud of her staying by her decisions and knowing of what she wanted, even if it comes up to her with pain and retaliation. She told her granddaughter how important it is in life to know what you desire for and follow it,no matter what the condition is going to be.
Everybody was stunned by the support she was getting from a 2 generation old women including her friend, who always thought that wearing saree, cooking food is not modern but partying, night outs is.
But Today she realised that being modern doesnt necessarily involves what clothes you wear or what places you visit, its a thought and the ability to process it with the need of the hour.
